The Pattern Master
(Another long but good article on why we bother with personal growth.)
I’ve been sending my book manuscript out to agents lately. I wrote what I thought was a rippin’ hot pitch letter and included the juiciest bits of my writing samples.
I’ve had just four replies, all rejections.
Then, last night I was lying in bed watching “(Un)well,” a new TV show that explores all kinds of alternative therapies. The first show was about essential oils. And it struck me: they were explaining things that I already knew about, that I already “got,” there was nothing new here. But they were acting as if I’d never heard of oils before and was clueless about the whole exciting and dramatic industry!
I realized in that moment that my pitch letter has been falling on deaf ears. I’ve been acting like every potential agent already knows all about patterns, blocks, and personal growth. I’ve been approaching them like they’re insiders, long-timers. They’re not. Most of them have barely heard of Tony Robbins. They’re probably wondering what the hell I’m writing about.
“What the heck is this weirdness?! Is she a motivational speaker? Life coach? Shrink? Psychic? I don’t get it. What’s a pattern? Why should I care? Why would anyone care? Nobody will buy this.”
When you’re inside of something, you lose sight of other people’s perspective. I walk, talk, and breathe concepts like flow, energy, patterns, blocks, limited thoughts, lack thinking and scarcity mindset. Which sound like total gobbledygook to their ears.
Which may sound like gobbledygook to your ears, too. Because, who cares about flow! Patterns-smatterns. Limiting thoughts, blippity blops. You’re pretty sure if something’s not working in your life, it’ll just fix itself eventually. It might come to a crashing end, or just wither away through neglect or inertia, but you can wait. You have forever. You’re content to pine and fantasize, to keep stuffing down your hopes and just letting whatever wants to fall into your life, fall in. No money? Well, that never changes, won’t ever change, nothing you’ve done has made it change. No love and intimacy? Well, people suck and life doesn’t want you to be happy.
Nah, I’m messing with you. Yucky yucky yuck.
But I may not be far off the mark. I’m thinking about friends of mine who have these same kinds of constant, grinding patterns. To solve them, they either go to therapy (which I’m a fan of) or more usually, they think that they just need to skill up somewhere, somehow. So they take a “how to” class: How to practice Reiki. How to flirt on Tinder. How to read oracle cards. How to build your email list. How to put on a webinar summit. On and on.
And then at the end of the day, they’re sitting with skills up the wazoo and still absolutely nothing changing around them.
This isn’t a mystery, I tell them. There’s an explanation for this.
Life doesn’t change until YOU change. Change on the inside, and your life follows suit on the outside.
So what are those things you do inside to change? (Hint: They do not include taking a new online course to learn more skills that you won’t use.)
Instead, the answer is…go find your patterns, blocks, and limited thinking. Then learn about the positive forces that help you and shape you: flow and energy. Become a master of them. Wield your inner power like a magician with her wand.
Here is what I should be telling my potential agents:
Your patterns force you to do the same things over and over (for better or worse.)
Your blocks are the things you cannot see in yourself that nonetheless rule and shape you and the limits of your success.
Your limited thinking (or ceilings, as I call them) is what tells you to aim lower and don’t expect much. In fact, you probably don’t even know what big ideas or possibilities you’re missing out on, since they’re not even in the scope of your imagination.
Your lack thinking constantly tells the Universe what you can’t have, don’t expect to get, and are prepared to go without (again).
Think of all these things as “limiters” in your life. They put the high limiting walls around what you can do, be, have or feel.
But some of us discover, somewhere along the way, that these limiters really suck, and we wonder if we have to keep them, and what might happen if we let them go?
Usually we start thinking this when we’re staring down some particular crappy moment in our life. We look at the things we’ve made or settled for that don’t make us happy. We feel stuck, frustrated, or have just given up.
But it doesn’t end there. It doesn’t have to.
Just start taking a walk down the path of inner growth. Change on the inside, and your life changes on the outside. Stop trying to do it the other way around. It doesn’t work.
Hmm, maybe I should even be sending this article to all those agents.
“Dear agent, let me introduce you to your patterns, blocks and limited thinking.”
Hahah, no, I don’t think that would go over well either.
I guess you just have it inside you to do this, or you don’t. You get it and embrace it, or you don’t.
Because for those of us who do, we see our lives as brilliant canvases always hungry for bright new paint. We look at frustration as a friend who clues us into the areas we’re going to change. We see life as holding an avalanche of abundance for us, just waiting for us to tap in.
I hope that’s you.
Because personal, inner growth is what everything stems from. It’s the central fountain, the Holy Grail. And if you find someone or something that can successfully lead you into the depths of it and help you transform your inner world, then you should never, ever let them go.
I would love to hear your comments on this article. Please leave one below!
P.S. I work with a small group of you privately each month to help you go big in your lives.
If you know that the success you’ve already experienced is only the starting point in your life, and your next series of beautiful, enriching successes is still ahead of you, then you’re perfect for this. We’ll dismantle your patterns, reveal your blocks, shine light through your lack-thinking, and introduce you to the ease and flow works for you, on your behalf, every single day. I will help you build things in your life that are insanely satisfying. I’ll help you grow your cash flow and abundance or anything else you put on your agenda.
Would you like to do this with me?
Email me that you’re interested in being my personal student, and I’ll personally reply. Even better, go straight to booking a time to talk to me. Either way, it’ll be a pleasure getting to meet you. . .and seeing what you’re ready to become.
Always a great reminder… Thank you Summer 🤍… Have you approached New World Library? Marc Allen will get it… Hugs Nicolette 🌺
